Tour duration:
Highlights: La Concha Bay / Mount Igeldo’s cliffs / Zarautz
We will start our sailing from San Sebastian’s port. Once onboard we will enter the bay on our way offshore. We will leave behind Santa Clara Island and head West towards Getaria. On our way to our fishing lovely town of destination we will pass another two well-known villages, Orio and Zarautz.
The first place we find on our trip is Mount Igeldo. This is a natural setting that separates San Sebastian city from Orio town in the coast. While we sail next to it, we can enjoy the view of its amazing cliffs as well as admire its hidden coves. We can highlight 2 of the most famous ones; first we will see Tximistarri cove, an unknown corner even for the locals, at the feet of Mount Igeldo’s amusement park.
As we continue sailing we will see the entrance of another charming fishing village Orio, well-known for being the home of the fishermen that caught the last wale at the Gulf of Biscay in 1901.
As we pass Orio, it’s the turn for Zarautz, one of the biggest towns in the coast. Zarautz it’s famous for the beach, the perfect place for surfers, many big World surf competitions have been held here.
From Zarautz, Mount San Antón or better known as Ratón de Getaria comes into view at the horizon. This mountain was a long time ago an island, but the need of a port to shelter the fishing ships made this village to add an artificial road connecting the island to the village.
Getaria is yet another fishing village home of Juan Sebastián Elkano, the skipper of the first ship that circumnavigated the world in the fifteenth century. But apart from Elkano, Getaria is as well the town of the famous fashion designer Cristobal Balenciaga.
Once in Getaria we can enjoy a swim at markobe beach or delight in tasting local food and wine at one of the splendid restaurants in town.
