Touristic Tours
The Flysch of Zumaia is a must for everyone coming to the Basque Country. Either walking along the coast path or as in our case, sailing, it offers an incomparable and unique view.
More than 13 km of incredible and steep cliffs, these unique rock formations located within Zumaia, Deba and Mutriku villages tell us about more than 60 million years of history of our planet.
The term flysch refers to sedimentary rock layer formations produced millions of years ago at sea. They alternate layers of hard and soft materials.
100 million years ago, Iberia and Europe were separated by a sea. Zumaia was 1,000 meters deep. When the plates of Iberia and Europe collided 40 million years ago, the materials accumulated at the bottom of the sea by tectonic forces were raised, resulting in the formation of these cliffs, together with the creation of the Pyrenees. The Flysch is one of the world’s greatest and most spectacular revelations and it holds the key to great events in the history of the planet. That’s why this area of the Basque coast has become a global reference for scientists around the planet.
Due to its scientific value, the coastal area of the Flysch, between Mutriku, Deba and Zumaia was declared a UNESCO World Geopark in 2010.
Discover one of the most spectacular natural areas of the Basque coast on this boat trip.
