Estimated sailing time: 3-8 hours
Route: San Sebastián – Getaria – San Sebastián
Tour duration:
Highlights: La Concha Bay / Mount Igeldo’s cliffs / Zarautz
We will start our sailing from the port of San Sebastian. Once onboard we will enter the bay on our way offshore. We will leave Santa Clara Island behind and head west towards Getaria. We will go past two other well-known villages on our way there: Orio and Zarautz.
The first place we find on our trip is Mount Igeldo, a natural setting that separates San Sebastian from Orio at the coast. While we sail next to it, we will admire its amazing cliffs and hidden coves. Tximistarri and Igiti are two of them.
As we continue sailing we will see the entrance to the charming fishing village of Orio, well-known among locals for being home to the fishermen who caught the last whale at the Gulf of Biscay in 1901.
We go past Zarautz next, one of the biggest towns of the Basque coast. Famous for its beach, Zarautz is the perfect place for surfers. Many international surfing competitions have been held here.
From Zarautz, the outline of Mount San Antón comes into view at the horizon, a sign that we are reaching Getaria. This mouse-shaped mountain, hence its name Ratón de Getaria, was an island a long time ago. However, the need of a port to shelter the fishing ships led the town to add an artificial road connecting the island to the village.
Getaria is the birthplace of two illustrious sons: fashion designer Cristróbal Balenciaga and sailor Juan Sebastián Elkano, skipper of the first ship that circumnavigated the world in the sixteenth century.
Once in Getaria, we can enjoy a swim at Malkorbe beach or taste local food and wine at one of the excellent restaurants in town.
